Book, “A GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE OF LOUISIANA, THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, AND TERRITORY OF ALABAMA...”New York. 1817. 356,[3]pp. plus two maps (one folding). Contemporary three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Head and foot of spine lightly worn. Circular hole in titlepage, repaired with older paper, not affecting text. Contemporary manuscript notes on p.29. Minor toning. Good plus. Second and best edition of this work. Darby, one of the most respected surveyors of his day, enlarged the first edition of this study of the soil, climate and inhabitants of the area to include the Territory of Alabama and the new state of Mississippi. The folding map shows most of Louisiana, the western part of Georgia, and West Florida. Darby offers an explanation for the map in an additional three pages following the text. His surveying and research efforts became the basis for the Melish map of the U.S. produced in 1818. The large folding map by Melish was issued in a separate portfolio.
