Rare CDV of Rutherford B. Hayes taken during the Civil War. Hayes served with the 23rd Ohio, and was wounded five times in battle, most seriously at South Mountain. He had a reputation for bravery, and was promoted to Major General. In later years Hayes became President in one of the most disputed elections in history. This rare image has some pencil notations on the verso, one being the date "November 13, 1863", and a pencil Identification below his image. CDV is in fine condition save for some light age. War date images of Hayes rarely, if ever, appear on the market.
