Impressive 13" x 37" chromlitho, "National Exposition, For the Benefit of the, Garfield Monument Fund, Washington, D.C., Nov. 25th to Dec. 3rd, 1882, Excursion Tickets from All Principal Stations/, t Greatly Reduced Rates, Penna, RR." Rendered by the American Bank Note Company of NY. Black and white lettering on orange background, engravings of President James Garfield and the Capitol Dome, and ornate lettering. Bears some tape-repair shadowing. Framed. Impressive exhibit item associated with the nation's second assassinated President. This was authorized by joint resolution of the Senate and House of Representatives, August 7. 1882. The object of of the undertaking was to raise funds with which to erect a statue in the city to “the memory of Gen. James A. Garfield, late President of the United States . which work is in the hands of a committee of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland, who have already collected for this purpose some twenty thousand dollars, and expect, with the results of the Exposition, to have a sufficient sum with which to erect a work befitting the great name it is proposed to commemorate.” The monument stands in the circle at First Street, S.W., and Maryland Avenue, where it was unveiled on May 12, 1887.
