Printed invitation on a folded sheet, 4” x 6-1/4”, Sacramento. October 1, 1852, accompanied by a printed calling card, and envelope. The Sutter Rifles, which mustered in on June 26, 1852, was the first military company organized in Sacramento, and named in honor of John A. Sutter. Made up of volunteers, the company was mostly used as an honor guard and for ceremonial occasions, but they did go to San Francisco in 1856 in order to help suppress the actions of the Second Vigilance Committee. This invitation to their first Grand Military Ball is dated October 1, 1852, and the ball was held on October 28. Contemporary news accounts report that the ball was held at the Orleans House, and attended by more than 500 men and women. The present invitation is addressed in manuscript to Mr. and Mrs. George F. Kinney, and is accompanied by a printed calling card of Reuben Greenfield, apparently a member of the Sutter Rifles. The company lasted until 1861. A rare piece of early Sacramento printing and California military ephemera. All housed in a half morocco and cloth folding case, spine gilt.
