An Assorted Grouping of 12 “Play Ball - America” baseball cards issued by Gum Inc., Philadelphia. Each black/white player card has the photograph on the face and the career background on the reverse. The cards are for players; Sylvester Johnson, August Richard Suhr, Irwin Fox, Joseph Gregg Moore, Myril Hoag, Frank Whitman Hayes, Vernon Gomez, Julius Joseph Solters, John H. Knott, James Charles Bagby, Alvin Jacob Powell, Thomas Davis Bridges, Robert H. Klinger, Edward Miller, and John H. Knott. While the cards may not seem monumental today, 1939 Play Ball Baseball was the beginning of a shift in the hobby. A larger size and clearer photographs offered card collectors more and the industry began to grow as a result.
