NICOLAY, John (1832-1901) Private Secretary to President Lincoln who subsequently co-authored Abraham Lincoln: A History with John Hay. He wrote The Outbreak of Rebellion on his own. Autograph Note Signed, “Jno G. Nicolay Priv. Sec.” September 15, 1864, and read “Respectfully referred by the President to the Hon. the Secretary of War.” on cover with not in another hand pertaining to Thomas P. Jones “a detective for several years in England, Canada, & the U. States, says that Maj. Genl. Dix knows him & would be willing to give him work upon a recommendation of the Secretary of War. Asks the President use his influence to get him a letter...” Soiled, else about VG.
