Good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., on "The Parting Moment" patriotic stationery, written by Corp. James O. Neer, Co. H, 45th Ohio Vols., Lexington, KY, Jan. 23, 1863, in part: "…our regiment left here…for Danville, KY…[Corp.] Dave Johnson was brought to some hospital in this town…he has been sick for some time…& has fallen away till he is very poor & weak …the Regt. will stay at Danville only a short time when they will be furnished horses & go on horseback the balance of the time. Capt. [William] Rhodes [DOD 11/2/63] will be here this afternoon & let me know where all the sick boys are. He was left behind for to find out where all the sick of the Regt were…Capt. Rhodes is also going to Covington…to hunt for deserters. He said that five of six men deserted last night from the 45th. There has been a great many deserting since we came here…your cousin. J. O. Neer." VG
