Single sheet broadside 5 x 8 (blank reverse) with black mourning border issued the day following his death, April 16, 1865. Fancy lettered headline "HEAD-QUARTERS, ARMY OF THE POTOMAC" over printed signature of Maj. Gen'l. George G. Meade: "The general commanding announces to the Army that intelligence received of the death by assassination of the President of the U.S…died at 7.22 on the morning of the 15'th…the president [took] active interest…in the welfare of this Army…had endeared himself to both officers and soldiers…an honest, noble patriot and sagacious statesman has fallen ! No greater loss…could have befallen our country…we earnestly pray that…this terrible calamity shall not interfere with the prosperity and happiness of our beloved country !"…and more. Light aging.
