PEPYS, Samuel (1633-1703). Called the "Father of the British Navy," member of the cabinet of King Charles II. Most noted for the very detailed, self-revealing diary he kept between the years 1660-69, wherein he witnessed the great plague of London, the great London fire, the triumphal return of Charles II to power after the quashing of the Popish plot. Autograph Document Signed, "Pepys," 1p, 8" x 12", London, Aug. 17, 1668. As clerk of the King's ships, Pepys provides a warrant after an official inquiry reinstating Captain Rand as Master Attendant at His Majesty's Navy Yard at Chatham and discharging Captain Annsley from further investigation of charges arising from "spoyles & Imbezzlements" to ships "which were sunck upon the approach of the Dutch." Penned in brown ink on watermarked, laid paper. Paper loss and water damage along length of right margin. Great majority of text remains entirely legible with a little uneveness of ink; normal toning, else in very good condition. Comes with reproduction image, suitable for framing together.
