Book, “BSERVATIONS ON CERTAIN DOCUMENTS ... IN WHICH THE CHARGE OF SPECULATION AGAINST ALEXANDER HAMILTON, LATE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY, IS FULLY REFUTED,” Philadelphia, 1800, Late 19th-century three-quarter pebbled morocco and marbled paper boards, spine gilt. Binding rubbed at extremities. Titlepage lightly foxed. Leaves A2-A4 (containing pages 3-8) bound in twice. About very good. The second edition, after the first of 1797, of the infamous "Reynold's pamphlet," in which Hamilton describes his affair with Maria Reynolds and admits to paying off a blackmailer. In the pamphlet Hamilton took the extraordinary step of admitting to adultery in order to clear his name of financial scandal. While successful in its purpose, it destroyed any hope of a political career on the national stage, and provided salacious ammunition for his enemies. This second edition was published by Hamilton's opponents to keep the scandal alive in the election of 1800, after the Hamilton family purchased and destroyed most of the original edition.
