Assignat for 5 Livres, 2 1/2" x 4", ca. 1789-1796, France. The assignat, a treasury bill, was originally intended as a promissory note for church lands seized by the newly formed French Republic. The notes, printed in the millions, drifted into circulation as currency and were largely responsible for the rampant inflation which plagued the French economy of the period. This one-sided example is clean, crisp, and uncirculated.
