Union war dated letter, written by “Ortho” Gale, who enlisted August 13, 1862 into Company A, 110 Ohio Infantry, January 5, 1863, Winchester, VA., 4pp., VG. In small part, “This finds me in the Republican Printing Office at Winchester ... Well Charley and I have several jobs done, the first was Freedom to Slaves, we had them stuck up around town. The citizens tore them down the same night. The Gen. had some more put up today. He says the the first person that tears one of them down will be sent to Camp Chase. I will send you a copy ... the people are hard up for everything and this Proclamation is making a great disturbance among them ...” Within a very few months, Winchester would again change hands. Ortho Gale would be captured. We have included a digital copy of the broadside.
