First Edition Book, "Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839," by Frances Anne Kemble (Fanny Kemble) (1809 - 1893), well-known English actress, was married to Pierce Butler, a Philadelphia resident and Georgia slave-owner and visited with him his plantantion in the Sea Islands in 1838 and 1839. The actress possessed an intense curiosity about the institution of slavery, keeping a day-by-day account of what she saw of the Negroes in Georgia. Her journal was made in the form of letters addressed to a New England friend, Elizabeth Dwight Sedgwick, and later published in this book form. It was printed in 1863, according to Kemble, to counteract the pro-Southern sentiments of the English aristocracy. This book portrays the mistreatment of the blacks and describes in minute detail the clothing, medical care, illiteracy, diseases, food, religious life, and difficulties of the slaves, especially those of the Negro women. The book was made into a movie, Enslavement: The True Story Of Fanny Kemble, in 2000. Harper & Brothers New York, 1863, 337p, plus 10p of ads.Rebound.
