Book, “A Brave Black Regiment” Louis Emillo, Boston, 1894 “With Appendix Upon Treatment of Colored Prisoners of War,”452 pp., ex-library, VG. The first black military unit authorized by the Secretary of War, led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the 54th performed valiantly as soldiers during the Civil War. The book is replete with photographs of the Black soldiers, the white officers, battle maps. With a new introduction, rare, previously unpublished photos of Emilio and members of the 54th, the complete regimental roster, and his lengthy appendix concerning Confederate treatment of black prisoners-of-war.
