Tintype, sixth-plate housed in a thermoplastic full case, patriotic mat with the motto “Constitution and Union” and a sailing ship, flags, regimental drums, and cannon. This rare photograph shows a black soldier holding his hands on the front lapels of his overcoat. His nine-button regulation frock coat with its high collar is visible underneath. He is wearing a bummer’s cap with insignia on top, and (unusually), an officer’s sword belt, with over-the-shoulder sling and the M1851 sword belt plate upside down. He also wears a Colt M1860 Army issue pistol tucked in his belt, butt out.
