A great Confederate soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., by Pvt. Joseph Knight 151st Virginia Militia, [n. p., but near Martinsburg, Va.], Dec. 24, 1861 recounting a skirmish with the Yankees at Falling Waters, [West] Virginia in December 1861., in part: "…I got down to Martinsburg that nit and they was awl gone …I stayed with Captain Culens [Collins]…went to the company next day and found them at Falling Waters and staid there till next day. They brought one hundred four and lost two men and wounded one. The Yankees are in fifty miles from Martinsburg coming down the Tuscarod road and I think there is a move on hand…we aint paid yet. Joseph Knight. I don't know when I shall come home…[for his friend, John A. Carpenter?]…we march from Martinsburg to Falling Waters and campt on Tuesday and next day about twelve o'clock the Yankees cutting bunches [retreating]. We're ttret [treking] back. John A. Carpen[ter]." The soldier's phonetic spelling has been corrected, else VG and as expected.
