Good Confederate soldier’s letter written and signed by “Daniel J. Hileman” who enlisted on 7/31/1861 at Lexington, VA into "H" Co. VA 27th Infantry. Listed as POW 5/12/1864 Spotsylvania Court House, VA., confined 5/15/1864 Fort Delaware, DE., released 6/15/1865. The 2pp. letter is datelined Camp at Centerville, Oct 26, 1861 and reads in part “There was a fight at Leesburg on the 21st ... the South gave them a complete brushing. The South had only four regiments in the fight. The Yankees had eleven .. They fought all day but the Southerners whipped them back into the river, killed and drowned about six hundred and took over six hundred prisoners and six pieces of cannon and about 1200 stacks of small arms ... Our loss at Leesburg is estimated at about three hundred killed or wounded ....” Include is the original cover which carries an ad for Valley female Institute, Winchester VA. Both vg.
