PICKENS, Francis W. (1805-1869) was Governor of South Carolina when that state became the first to secede from the Federal Government. Autograph Letter Signed “F.W. Pickens,” on official State of South Carolina executive Department letterhead, june 7, 1861, 1pp., VG. In small full, “The Collector of the port of Georgetown had been imprisoned for months on charge of treason. Perhaps you ought to order him removed elsewhere for trial as soon as possible, and at least removed from his present place of confinement.”
