RIPLEY, Roswell Sabine (1823-1887) An 1843 West Point graduate, brevetted twice for Mexican War service. As a Confederate lieutenant colonel in the South Carolina forces, he occupied Fort Moultrie, 1860, and Fort Sumter, after its evacuation by Major Robert Anderson in April 14, 1861. Ripley was appointed brigadier general in the CSA in August 1861. He later commanded a brigade and was wounded at Sharpsburg. Autograph Letter Signed “R.S. Ripley, Lieut. Col. Actg Condg,” to Colonel edward Manigault, Head Quarters Fort Moultrie, March 27, 1861, 1pp., VG.
