GIST, States Rights (1831 - 1864) Confederate Brigadier general who commanded a division at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, led his own brigade in the Atlanta campaign, killed in action leading his men at Franklin.DeSAUSSURE, William Davie (1819-1863) In was in 1855 that DeSaussure was commissioned a captain into the 1st United States Cavalry Regiment with an assignment to the western frontier where he battled against the Comanches and Kiowas. At Gettysburg, Colonel DeSaussure was instantly killed by a gunshot to the chest during a countercharge against a Union position in the Rose Woods.Autograph Document Signed “S.R. Gist, Adj. Genl SC”, March 8, 1861, on official State of South Carolina Head Quarters letterhead, 1pp, VG. In full, “The Treasury department will pay to the order Major W.D. DeSaussure one thousand Dollars for recruiting sevice for cavalry.’ then bold signed across the text “Received in full $1000, W.D. DeSaussure Major Cavalry.”
