Lieut. Joseph J. Legare was appointed A.D.C. to General G. T. Beauregard in April 1861. Later on he served with General J. H. Trapier (whom he mentions in the letter) and then served as Captain of Artillery.Autograph Letter Signed “Joseph J. Legare”, Charleston, June 19, 1861, to General Beauregard, 3pp., marked “Private”, VG. In small part, “Prior to leaving Charleston, Beauregard had given Trapier $20 to pay for certain articles. Here is what he lists: 38 Stereoscopic views @ 25 cts. ea. $9.50; Repair of watch $1.50; Sawing up flag staff $2.50; Printing labels for ditto $3.00.” It would appear Beauregard was making souvenirs from the Flag Staff.
