MANIGAULT, Gabriel Edward (1833 - 1899) was educated as a physician and zoologist, studying at the College of Charleston and the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, from which he was graduated in 1854. Gabriel was wounded in service of the Confederate States Army in October 1862. He was captured by Union forces 11 June 1864, and released in March 1865. He was a prominent professor at the City College of Charleston, and resided with Louis on Gibbs Street, Charleston. Autograph Letter Signed “G.Manigault” Charleston, Oct 2, 1861, to Governor Picken (who responds on page 4), 2pp. VG. In part, “Now when we have inteligence of the fitting out of powerful navy expeditions against our coast ... I take the liberty of calling your attention to a point of vital importance .... last November, Gov. Gist was urged to occupy Morris Island before the US troops could do so. When Major Anderson went into Ft. Sumter, I urged you to occupy that island ... The possession of Morris Island enabled us to reduce Fort Sumter ... Morris Island is quite as important to the safety of Charleston, and the command of the harbour as Sullivan’s Island ... But, as it stands now, three or four thousand Lincoln troops can seize upon it at any time, and could reduce Fort Sumter before our eyes, without the possibility of our effectually interfering.” Governor Pickens responds directly, in full “Gabriel Manigault, October 2nd, 1861. I think no 3000 troops could land and make a lodgement on Morris Island while our large guns on the parapet of Sumter could be brought to bear right on them and swipe the island. We reduced Sumter because Anederson did not resist the erection of forts & batteries, etc. - but if the fort is used as it ought to be no force can permanently land there. F.W. Pickens.”
