WICKHAM, William Carter (1820-1888) as a Union man, he was bitterly opposed to the war and voted against the ordinance of secession, but immediately upon the secession of Virginia, he determined to share the fortunes of his people, and took his company, "the Hanover dragoons, " into active service. Two manuscript orders on a single sheet, Fairfax C. H. (Virginia), June 24, 1861, one page, oblong octavo, the first by G. W. Lay of Joseph E. Johnston's staff, reading: "Captain Wickham Comdg. Cavalry will immediately furnish twenty or twenty-five of his best mounted men, with an officer to go under guidance of Col. Lipscomb, Actg. Aid to the Comg. Genl. For special detached service to continue probably a few hours only." Below, in Wickham's hand, is the Autograph Note Signed, his orders, reading: "Capt. Ball will furnish these men at once. Report at my office. W. C. Wickham, Capt. Comg. Cavalry." Once the war began in earnest, Captain Wickham quickly advanced in rank due to superior performance in the field. His exemplary command of the 4th Virginia Cavalry at Gettysburg won him a brigadier's commission. Light stains and creases, good condition.
