A great Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., by Pvt. James F. Cameron, [KIA Gettysburg, 7/2/63], Co. B, 11th Alabama Infantry, "Camp near Fredericksburg, Va.", Dec. 9, 1862, in part: "…this is the coldest spell we have had this winter. Well first there fell a heavy snow followed by a cold north wind which froze the ground. It has been so cold it was impossible to write…we are still camped in hearing of the Yankees. The river is all that separates us. Our pickets could fire on the Yankees anytime. There is no sense of a fight yet. You said…you would send my clothes by Bruce Barnes. I wish you would for I need them very bad especially the boots and overcoat. It is impossible for us to draw anything from the government or buy anything from the citizens. I gave 5 dollars for a pair of shoes when I was at Winchester and they are worn out already…you do not know how to ware out shoes until you go a soldiering. Virginia is nothing but bad rocks…send me something that is indestructible and warm…the President of the United States has issued a proclamation offering us 7 years to consider this matter and free our slaves on condition we return to the ole Union. Thomas Lowry and Lan [Orlander]Goree [MWIA Fredericksburg] have been detailed for sharpshooters. They will be armed with Sharps rifles. There is 100 hundred man detailed out of the brigade…you must send me a pair of gloves and some socks…Jas. F. Cameron. Most of Cameron's phonetic spelling has been corrected.
