A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. J. L. Grisham, Co. F, 8th Georgia Battalion, "Camp Lamar, Charleston, S. C., Dec. 3, 1862" to his sister, in part: "I write a few lines…as I may have an opportunity of sending it by a young man, a member of my company and one of my mess, being under age he will get a discharge. His name is J. F. Eves. I will send this letter by him if I can get him to stop at Manassas…I am in another company now. You can put company C on your next letter. I am better satisfied in this company than I was in the other one. The other one had rather a green set in it. Company C has some very clever men in it. The companies are A, B, C, D, E F, G. The Yankees come up Stono river twice lately in two or three boats [and] landed some men. The place they landed…is a bout a mile & three quarters from us. There are a great many boats lying off around here. Ft. Lamar…is being well fixed up. We look for an attack if they take this fort they will have to bring 50,000men. We think it is safe. The fort is just where the Yankees fought…last June [16th 1862, battle of Secessionville]. It was just a simple battery at that time [and] they made a charge on it several times but could not take it. Now it has been made a fort which would require a strong force to take. Some men think that the Yankees have boats that can run by Ft. Sumter. There is an officer in the city from Va. He thinks the Yankees can come in but they will have a hot time of it…more than 100 cannon can fire on a boat at one time. We sometimes see encouraging news of peace but we are most out of hopes of any peace soon. I think the war will close this spring. I hear accounts of our soldiers leaving…the army in Tenn. & Va…if the war holds much longer our people will see hard times. The Yankees when they come up the Stono river…fire bomb shells at our pickets along the river…they come up and land to get water. I went out with some more men hunting…that day there were about 100 men hunting…the guns shoot a long ways. Someone…about 400 yards from [me] shot at something…the ball came singing by me. I don't think it missed me two feet…if I get some of the Yankee bullets I will send them to you. There has been a great many picked up here. If this fellow comes by you must show him your rocks. Direct yours to Company C, 8th Ga. Batt…J. L. Grisham…". VG
