Confederate soldier’s letter by “Lewis Peacock” who enlisted on 3/15/1862 into "A" Co. GA 18th Infantry, POW 4/6/1865 Burkeville, VA., 4pp, from Camp near Fredericksburg, April 2, 1862, VG. In part, “ I thought I knew something when I left home but I soon found out I did not know nothing... When I got to Richmond .. I walked all the time and could not find any end to the town... A fellow has no time to play, only on your gun ... you have to rub it until you get it plum bright ... we have to mind when we are spoken to just as if we were niggers but before I will be equal with niggers I will fight until I die. ...”
