JACKSON, Thomas J. "Stonewall" (1824-1863) Graduate of West Point, he was an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute when war broke out. As a Confederate general he defeated numerous Union opponents, mortally wounded at Chancellorsville. A Southern icon. Autograph Letter Signed, “T.J. Jackson, Maj. Genl.” 1pp., Hd.Qr Valley District, Harrisburgh, April 18, 1862, written to Major General Ewell, VG. In full, “This note will be hand to you by Lt. Jse Boswell who is directed to guide you to Fisher’s Gap via Madison C.H. I expect to join you near the Gap. Please let your command rest on Sunday but resume the March early on Monday morning. I am General, your obdt serv. T.J. Jackson, Maj. Genl.” It is docketed “rec’d 3a.m. the 19th.” Noted historian James I. Robertson, Jr. suggests that Jackson was "a Christian soldier in every sense of the word." According to Robertson, Jackson "thought of the war as a religious crusade," and "viewed himself as an Old Testament warrior – like David or Joshua – who went into battle to slay the Philistines." Jackson strictly observed the Sunday Sabbath. James I. Robertson, Jr. notes that "no place existed in his Sunday schedule for labor, newspapers, or secular conversation." And here is a perfect example.
