A nice Confederate soldiers letter written Absalom K. Simonton nad signed “Abby”, who enlisted on 5/16/1861 at Iredell County, NC as a Captain, into "A" Co. NC 4th Infantry and was killed on 5/31/1862 at Seven Pines, VA. The three page letter datelined Manassas Virginia, February 17, 1862 reads in small part, “Col. Young left for home, this with a thirty day leave. It is certainly a public necessity that requires his presence ... his factory must be kept running or our soldiers will suffer for clothes. ... You like myself are glad to hear the draft. I hope our company will soon be filled to the maximum one hundred and twenty-five. ... If the Yankees do come up to Weldon and cut off communications with North Carolina, I much prefer you being in Statesville ... When Spring opens our army will have some hard fighting to do. I hope our forces will be able to drive them back ...” This comes with the original cover from Capt Simonton to his wife with “DUE 5” wet stamp and CDS “Tudor Hall Feb. 18”.
