A pathetic Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Joseph Terrell, 2nd Company Virginia Light Howitzers, "Camp near Orange C. Ho., Aug. 14, 1863", sent to a certain "Dear Cap", in part: "I left Richmond last Thursday. I did not have time to call by your house. Consequently, I have left all of my clothes behind. I have nothing with me except what I have on…I am in quite a destitute condition and entirely despondent and have been sick since I have been here. My blankets, oil cloth, overcoat and other articles is at your house. If you will be kind enough to…bring my things up to Orange C. H. I will pay all expenses. I do not know how else I can get them…let me hear on what day you will leave home and if I do not meet you at Orange C. H. mark my name on the baggage and leave them with Mr. Thompson…Mr. Thompson' store is on the right of the R. R. near the PO…pack them up securely and…purchase me two or three pairs of woolen socks. I will pay any price and be very much obliged to her. Cap. please try to attend to this little request…address to Jos: Terrell, 2nd Co. Virginia Howitzers, 1st Regt. Va., Artillery, 2nd Army Co. My health is very bad and the surgeon wont excuse me. I would give all that I am worth for a good substitute…J. Terrell." Most likely, "Dear Cap" was E. H. Chandler as Union soldier George S. Youngs 126th New York found this in Chandler's home in 1864. Youngs adds, "perhaps he has the shell fever. You will notice that he belongs to the 2nd Army Corps. G. S. Y." VG.
