TRENHOLM, George Alfred (1807-1876) was a prominent politician in the Confederate States of America and served as the Secretary of the Treasury succeeding Memminger. By 1860 he was one of the wealthiest men in the United States. He had financial interests in steamships, hotels, cotton, plantations, and slaves; he was also director of the Bank of Charleston and of a South Carolina railroad. When the Civil War broke out, his company, Fraser, Trenholm and Company, became the Confederate government's overseas banker. With an office in London, it arranged cotton sales and financed its own fleet of blockade runners. Document Signed “G.A. Trenholm” on a partially-printed real estate transaction, 16” x 20,” light blue heavy paper, previously folded, minor breaks, May 29, 1863, VG. Trenholm is selling “piece and parcel of Land with the Mansion and other buildings ... lying between Corner of Meeting and Hudson Streets in the city of Charleston .... in consideration of the sum of $25,000 ....” The document retains its original seal. Very displayable.
