Autograph Letter of Major Helms, 2p. quarto, Sacketts Harbour, August 18, 1814, with integral leaf addressed to Mr. Thomas Barton of Fredericksburg, Virginia, in part: “...I will endeavour to...be giving you the earliest news of the NW Army under Genl. Ganes, who succeeded Genl. Brown in command. An express arrived a few moments since announcing to the command of this station a seziual victory over the enemy at Fort Erie gained by the Troops under the command of that excellent Genl. Genl. Gaines; whose flanks was attacked with the bayonet at 1/2 past 2 o’clock on the morning of the 15th...the contest lasted for three hourse, where the enemy were beaten & fled leaving about 350 killed, wounded and prisoners. Our loss is inconsiderable, 40 killed & wounded, but no doubt our killed & wounded are as numberous as the enemy. We humainly make prisoners...” Dampstaining, else about VG.
