A great Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. William L. Faulkner, Co. I, 17th South Carolina, [POW Crater, Va., 7/30/64, DOD Elmira Prison, N. Y., 9/17/64], Burnetts Farm, [Sullivan's Island, S. C.], March 18-19, 1864 to his wife Issa (Lizzie) Craig, in part: "…there was quite a sharp frost last night which stiffened up the sand flys so that they do not annoy us so bad…we are still working on Sullivan's Auburn contract (as the boys call it) on the battery and will not have it completed for some time…we work by reliefs. Our com. works from 12 o'clock till 4. Each com. works 4 hours per day…I had written to Dick you supposed I would locate myself here…the number of Negro graves & the sand flys has put me out of the notion of living at this place. Our hopes are ruined…by the news…of the French Government recognizing our Independence…this will be quite an excitable year in the North. I fear old Abe will be reelected for…several states has nominated him. If he is elected again Wo unto us for I do not think the South can carry on a war another year without considerable suffering both at home and in the army…I recd. the ten dollar bill…you cannot pass one of them here…we have very little use for money here as there is nothing to buy. Capt. Still sais we will draw our money as soon as the new issue comes out which will be about the first of April…while it would be best for us to sell some cotton and pay up…I do not want you to sell any cotton if you can get along without it for I would prefer cotton…to Confederate trash. You have not told me what you done with what you made last year…from what I have heard the pressing officer is taking several horses from old Lancaster. It is a pity they should take my horses that works in the farm, but I would not care they would take all the pleasure & saddle horse in the District. You said if your mules ware a little larger you would let them have Jim…W. L. Faulkner." Faulkner is now buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, New York. Minor spotting and soiling, else VG.
