JACKSON, William Lowther (1825 - 1890) Confederate General who on April 15, 1865, six days after Gen. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House, disbanded his brigade. Refusing to surrender he headed westwards, finally getting a parole in Brownsville, Texas, on July 26, 1865. Autograph Letter Signed, “Will”, to his wife, Mt. Crawford en Route Down the Valley, June 29th, 1864, 2pp., pencil, dark. Jackson provides his wife with money and instructions how to disperse it. In part, “Of the Confederate money send over and pay Mr. marge. Mr. Dickenson is not in a hurry and you need not pay him ... You will need the residue at Fincastle. ... I can not speak of our destination. That is a secret with the generals, but a few days will disclose everything. We nearly threatened Washington City and may go to Pittsburg. ... Would that I could be with you always ... If any accident happens to me, I pray God that you be spared to see & protect our children .... “
