RHETT, Alfred Moore (1829-1889) was a Colonel in the Confederate Army, and commanded Fort Sumter when it was unsuccessfully attacked by the monitor fleet, and until 1863, when it ceased to be an artillery post of importance. He was a well known duelist. The most noted affair in which he was engaged was a fatal duel in 1863 with Colonel Ransom Calhoun of South Caroline. After the war he was Chief of Police of Charleston. Document Signed, “Col. Alfred Rhett” on 1pp., blue paper manuscript document, Special orders No. 28, Head Quarters Sullivan Island, July 17th 1864. The document appoints Lieut. Cm Cresswell, 1st SC Inftry to ordnance officer. VG
