BONHAM, Milledge Luke (1813-1890) Confederate general, member of the Confederate Congress, and Governor of South Carolina in 1863. Autograph Letter Signed “M.L. Bonham” Ex. Department, Jan 1/64 written to W.C. Bee (Owner of an inportant blackade running company), Charleston, tanned yet rich content. In small part, “I am fully impressed withthe importance of this State’s connection with Your company and am exceedingly desirous of realizing for the State the benefits of the association. ... You will perceive the Act confides much that is to be done to Mr. Furman in whom I also confide that which is to be done by us jointly. ... As to a selection of such articles..to meet the wants of the citizens and soldiers of the State ... long range guns, blankets, shoes, clothing, arms, ammunition ...” ... plus, an autograph letter signed “C.M.Furman, Pres.”, on “Bank of the State of South Carolina” letterhead, written to Governor Bonham, June 2, 1864, 1pp., VG. Furman advises of the authorization of shipment on board of the Fannie & Alice and suggests that with Mr. Bee the President of the Company not in Charleston “propose to write at once to the agents of the Company .. proposing them to put on board of either steamer that may be in port a portion of cotton ...”
