A good Reconstruction era letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by James R. Jones, Dudley, Edgar Co., Illinois, Aug. 15, 1866 to his brother, in part: "…I would like to know if the negroe is any better situated now than when they were slaves. The radicals in this country say that they are but I can not think so. I would like to know [what] you all think [of] Andy Johnson's policy. I do not like him for he was a traitor to his state & also to the party that elected him…I am afraid if the democracy takes hold of him he will turn again but I suppose we will have to try and hold him up the best we can for I believe that he at present is a little better than the radicals…James R. Jones." Minor spotting, else VG
