A good Reconstruction era letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by James R. Jones, Dudley, Edgar Co., Illinois, Sept. 26, 1867 to his brother, in part: "…I would be so glad if you would make up your mind to leave your old place & come out…where you can have all the privileges of a white man & not be on an equality with negroes. I can not see how the Southern people can stand it. I would leave if I had to walk & crawl by turns, but I may not brag too much for Ohio [and] one of our western states are going to vote on negro Equality in October & if it goes that way I am afraid all the balance will do the same. It seems to me that the people have all gone crazy. I would like to come & see you all once more & see the old country since the war but I cannot leave home. I have to stay in the store all the time…James R. Jones." Minor spotting, else VG
