ROSSER, Thomas Lafayette (1836 - 1910) was a member of the US Military Academy when he resigned to enlist in the Confederate Army in April, 1861. Commissioned a Captain of artillery, he commanded his battery during the Seven Days Battles, Peninsula Campaigns and was later promoted Colonel of the 5th Virginia Cavalry. He commanded his regiment in the fighting at Antietam, Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness and was promoted Brigadier General. For distinguished service in the Shenandoah Valley, he was appointed Major General in November, 1864. In January 1865, he conducted a successful raid on New Creek, West Virginia, taking hundreds of prisoners and seizing much need quantities of supplies. He commanded a cavalry division during the Siege of Petersburg and was in the Appomattox Campaign until he surrendered at Staunton, Virginia, on May 4, 1865. Rosser responds to a request for information which reads in large part “To settle a little controversy would you be willing to give me the date you entered the Confederate service, also your official rank at that time, and what was your command at the close of the Civil War ...” Rosser responds on the reverse “1st May 1, 1862; 2nd 1st Lieut of Artillery; 3rd Major General, Thos.L. Rosser, Charlottesville VA., Sept. 28th 1895.”
