A good pair of war-date printed Northern penny songs, ca. late 1861, both 1p. 8vo., published by Johnson, Philadelphia and dedicated to the members of the 28th which was at that time stationed near Point of Rocks, Md. The first is entitled: "The Gallant 28th", reading, in part: "…we are bold Americans not fear for any foe. We are ordered on by Geary and that you all do know…it was the 16th of September…when we spied a flying army of Southern Volunteers. At 3 o'clock they fired a shot so we returned the same. Fire on, my boys, said Geary…less than two hours after, this battle it was won…boy who could refuse to fight when Geary gives command…we'll never leave the Point of Rocks till victory shall be won…it was on the 16th of October…when we were upon Bolivar Heights, the fighting was severe. Here is health to Col. Geary, he showed the rebels fun and likewise unto the 28th, that don't intend to run…". VG to near fine. ... plus, The second is entitled: "Col. Geary 28th Regiment, P. V. Company K", reading, in part: "…we are from Pennsylvania and never feared a foe…on the sixteenth of October…in the town of Harpers Ferry the rebels did appear . At eight o'clock they fired on us…it was at Harpers Ferry this battle began but on the Heights of Bolivar this battle it was won…we captured at this battle a Norfolk stolen gun and a rank secession preacher who came to see the fun…[Turner] Ashby saw our boys, as they charged his rebel band. Said, "I can never stand this ground when Geary gives command!"…we are bound to try Manassas and all will plainly see. The twenty-Eighth can take it if you only let them be…so cheer up…". Many more patriotic verses. Stained, upper right corner paper loss, else VG
