War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "near Bull Run, Va., Dec. 17, 1862", in part: "…two boys died in the hospital…one of the small pox the other of the measles. They sent the body of one of them home. He was a member of Co. D. You say…the surgeon would vaccinate all of us. He did call for all those who desired to have the operation performed but when I showed the Dr. my arm he said that I did not need it. That the scar was first rate and just as good as new…the 50th and 33rd were badly cut up at Fredericksburg. The news from there…is very discouraging. It is said Burnside has been driven back with the loss of 12,000 men in killed, wounded and missing [and] McClellan has resumed his command. I can hardly believe the latter part…and hope it is unfunded…Oak Nafie was up here…his regiment is at Fairfax…they have been on the march for the last nine days. They are in Slocum's division which was ordered rom Harpers Ferry to Fredericksburg to reinforce Burnside when within 20 miles of that place their orders were countermanded…the whole division was sent to Fairfax Station. The rebel Gen. Hill has got away from Fredericksburg and…they are looking for him down this way…two of our pickets were shot on their posts night before last. One of them was instantly killed, the other was mortally wounded. They belonged to a Vermont regiment…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
