Strong Union soldier’s letter written and signed by Charles Pyne who mustered into "A" Co. DC 3rd Militia Infantry then was commissioned into US Army 6th Infantry. Pyne was captured 8/30/1862 2nd Bull Run, VA. being severely wounded in left leg, amputated. He was then exchanged 9/21/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA. The 4pp. letter, Camp Newport News Va., August 19, 1862 to his brother reads in part, “From a point a little distance from here can be seen the ill fated Cumberland which was destroyed by the Merrimac. Her masts stand high out of the water and she presents a mournful sight. The division has to wait here for special orders from Gen’l McClellan. ... I only wish to get off this detestable Peninsula. What Gen’l McClellan is going to do no one seems to know. But you may rest assured he is going to surprise the country and the Rebels before very long in a very unexpected manner. I think the people have shown themselves very fickle and ungrateful towards McClellan. ... He saved the whole army from the destruction planned for us and was himself exposed in every action almost as the meagerest soldier in the ranks. And now the people deserting him are putting all their confidence in Pope. The weather has been very hot at Harrisons Landing, very unhealthy. Soldiers are dying like flies all around and we could here the drum and fife going all day with the funeral march. ....” VG
