WARD, John Henry Hobart (1823 - 1903) served in the Mexican War, at the commencement of the Civil war he recruited the 38th N. Y. infantry, and was its first colonel. He took part in the first battle of Bull Run, in which his regiment lost 126 men, and participated in all the battles of the Peninsula under McClellan, including Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Glendale and Malvern Hill to the James river. On Oct. 4, 1862, was promoted to be brigadier-general of volunteers, then writes this letter. Autograph Letter Signed “J. H. Hobart Ward, Brig. Gen’l.”, Camp near Conrad’s Ferry, Oct. 9, 1862, 3pp., to His Excellency Edwin D. Morgan, VG. In part, “Having been revieved from command of my regiment by promotion to Brigadier General, I naturally feel a strong interest in my old command whol I regard as my children. It is a gallant body of men ... I would therefore suggest that if able Lt. Col. Strong be my successor and if not able that Major Potters be considered. if by force of circumstances ... either of the gentlemen mentioned incapable, I would most earnestly recommend Liet. Col. Wm. Birney ... I consider Col. Birney one of the ablest men in our army ....’ VG.
