JOHNSON, Andrew(1808-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States. Becoming president on Lincoln's assassination in 1865, Johnson attempted to pursue the conciliatory reconstruction policies Lincoln had envisioned but Johnson was increasingly thwarted by Radical Republican desires for revenge. The conflict finally led to an 1868 congressional impeachment of Johnson, but he survived by one vote. He left office embittered and in disgrace, but later found a measure of exoneration, and, five months before his death, regained his Senate seat. Partially printed Document Signed as governor “Adrew Johnson” being a State of Tennessee commision for Horace Newton Fisher to rank of First Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of the Middle Tennesse Cavalry, May 7, 1863. Document is clean, 13” x 17”. ...plus, a period full standing, studio CDV of Fisher in uniform.
