A pair of Union soldier letters written and signed by James Flyn who enlisted 10/15/1861 into H company Mass 28th Infantry, wounded at Bull Run, and discharged for wound 5/23/1863. From Hilton Head Feb 24th (1862), 4pp., last page cross writing, in part, “I have at last arrived in Dixie ... in the Palmetto State” ... he continues with a tortuous review of the ship’s trip south arriving at Port Royal bay. he continues “There is not one stone large or small on the place ... it is all fine sand like flour ... There is 10 or 11 regiments here from every state, Cavalry, Artillery, Infantry. They had a great fight here when they took it and the place is full of balls and shells and bullits. There is lots of niggers here men women and children . We expect to be in a fight before long ....” plus, a second letter, Alexandria, VA., Nov. 18th, 2pp.. In part, “I am very sorry that I can not enjoy Thanksgiving with you but the condition of my wound will not allow me .... the Doctor told me he would get me a furlough as soon as my wound was fir to go. He said it wouldn’t do to let a man off with such a looking arm as mine ....”
