War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "near Bull Run, Va., Dec. 21, 1862", in part: "…we had quite an excitement in camp. Some of our pickets were driven in this morning and reported that they had seen a force of rebel cavalry and infantry. D Utassy immediately dispatched a courier to the commandant of the 39th N. Y. They fell in and marched off toward Bull run bridge…by this time another courier rode up to some of the 11th Mass. Battery who were engaged in loading some logs in one of their baggage wagons. We saw them drop their logs and start for their battery a run. By the time they were beating the long roll in the 151st Pennsylvania. Next our Regt. were ordered to fall in which they did double quickly. The 151st with two pieces of artillery followed the 39th. Our regt. formed a line of battle and stacked arms. We were held as reserve…in about an hour the men who went out returned and the Gen. rode up to our Col. and told him he might dismiss his men…since those two men were shot which I mentioned in my last [letter the] pickets are afraid of every man they see…the pickets have it the hardest of any of them they have to march several miles to their post with their knapsacks and all their accoutrements…[Dec. 23]…the 26th Michigan has been added to our brigade and our duty will not be so excessive…G. S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
