War-date Union soldier's letter, 4 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Union Mills, Va., Jan. 14, 1863, in part: "…there were two men shot on picket night before last. One of them was killed the other wounded through the calf of the leg…such occasions as this do not excite the comments of the men…as much as the death from disease which have become a daily…occurrence. Last week 11 men died from our regiment and there is not a day…but some Co. is called upon to render the last honors to some comrade who has fallen for the good of his country…Capt. Aikens Co. draw rations for 45 men and we have ten or twelve men on detached duty…the regiment has dwindled away considerably. 16 men have deserted from our Co. We have got half the number of men we started with. If the men die as they have for the last month there will not be 400 left in the spring…it is laughable to hear the boys when the bugle sounds the "sick call". Eight or ten will imitate the notes of the bugle and sing out fall in sick, fall in sick, come and get your quinine…that is all they do get no matter what ails them…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
