War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Union Mills, Va., Feb. 1, 1863, in part: "…I have a lead pencil that I got of the sutler but it is good for nothing…it is impossible to get a good article of a sutler…George Hill in just been in here. He came up here after letters for the Pioneer Corps…the corps was brigaded this afternoon. He drew a new suit of clothes…and has more than he wants. His coat and pants are different from ours…I must correct a mistake I made…that Gen. Hays has a wooden leg. He has been wounded through the calf of both legs which causes him to walk stiffly and I suppose that gave rise to the rumor…as far as the president's proclamation is concerned I think it will do us full as much harm as good…the war on our part has been carried on by proclamations but they do not seem to have much effect, but Jeff's seem to be effective for instance the one demanding the removal of Gen. Butler. It looks as if old Jeff could have just such officers in our army as he wants…rather removed Gen. Butler the president should have seen every officer and man in the army hung…I will prophecy…this war ends…by the acknowledgement of the independence of the Southern Confederacy…Mr. Tuttle says we can not expect to be rid of war so long as there is so much wickedness in the army. The profanity of the regt. is indeed frightening. There is scarcely a man who does not utter an oath almost every other word, but I trust that whatever…sins I may be guilty of I [can] say with a clear conscious that I am not guilty of taking the name of god in vain…the Palmetto button which you will find enclosed was given to me by a member of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers on Bolivar Heights immediately after the surrender of Harpers Ferry. We had a very interesting and friendly conversation on the war in which he expressed a strong determination on the part of the south to fight to the last man and the last drop of blood. He had been in the war ever since the fall of Fort Sumter…I had a ten cent check on the sutler and went to get an apple and he had two stamps which I made him give me for change…I thought [I] put them in my pocket but I must have slipped it under my belt and lost it for I have not seen it since…George S. Youngs." The original "DUE 3" transmittal cover endorsed by Chaplain T. Spencer Harrison is included. A bit light, else VG.
