War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Union Mills, Va., Feb. 4-7, 1863, in part: "…the officer of the guard requested me to act as corporal which high position I accepted…it was dug near the Bull Runbattlefield. I found an old skull about half a mile from the camp about two weeks ago which I had a [mind] to make a ring of and send you but on reflection it seemed too horrible. It was minus the under jaw. Somebody picked it up afterwards and brought it over to camp and Jim smashed it with an axe…we…then were ordered to quarters to hold ourselves in readiness to march at a moments warning…all father has to do with the allotment is to put his name on the back and take it to the bank and get is cashed. George S. Youngs" The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
