War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Union Mills, Va., Mar. 8, 1863, in part: "…I have changed my quarters having moved from Barnum's Hotel…into the Hog-pen in company with S[amuel] Blairsdell, J[ames] Holmbeck [Hollenbeck, WIA Wilderness, Va., 5/6/64] and Frank Cole. It is probable that the latter will leave for ohm before long. He came here about a month since having been home since we left Harpers Ferry. He was wounded on Maryland Heights [on 9/13/62] and has in a measure lost the use of his left arm. He is a great fellow to gamble and spend he money as easily as he gets it…Frank finds the provisions and I do the cooking. They call me Louisa. How they came to chose that name I do not know. They debated whether it was best to call me that or Matilda but finally decided on that…what little cooking I did [at] home was not altogether useless…Capt. Aikens…has resigned and left here last Monday. I shook hands with him and parted from him with sincere regret. I sincerely believe him to have been the best line officer in the regt…the attack which has ben expected for the last week has not yet come off…G. S. Y." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
