War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., (with small 12mo. price slip with diary purchase entry) written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., Union Mills, Va., Mar. 20, 1863, in part: "…I suppose…you have heard of the cavalry raid on Fairfax Court House on the 9th of this month. Our regt. was out on that momentous occasion…ten men and a sergeant from each Co. were sent out on a scout…they [the rebels] were far enough away long before we were sent out. We went out as far as Centreville and there learned that they had left the line near that place…in the morning…I see that the Government is about to draft six hundred thousand more men. It must make some of them feel rather blue round the gills…I hope they wont draft anybody that don't feel inclined to go but if they do…they know they can resign at any moment…G. S. Y." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
